Million Angesoman, an IFRoS Master’s graduate (2022-2024), is now a PhD candidate at KU Leuven in Ghent, Belgium, specializing in 3D SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping). He credits the IFRoS program with sparking his interest in the field and providing him with the foundational knowledge and practical skills necessary for his doctoral research. Read his account below to learn how IFRoS shaped his academic path.
“After completing the IFRoS Erasmus Mundus MSc in Intelligent Field Robotic Systems, I embarked on an exciting new chapter of my academic journey. I am currently pursuing a PhD at KU Leuven in Ghent, Belgium, as a Doctoral Candidate in the DRAMCO Research Group, part of the Faculty of Engineering Technology. My research focuses on 3D SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping), a field I became passionate about during my time in the IFRoS program.
It was through the IFRoS courses that I was first introduced to SLAM, and I immediately fell in love with it. This interest guided me to focus my thesis on SLAM, where I could dive deeper into the field. The courses taught during the IFRoS program were fundamental in helping me understand the intricacies of SLAM, and the second-semester hands-on project was pivotal. By implementing SLAM on real robots, I was able to solidify my theoretical understanding and build practical skills. These experiences not only sharpened my technical abilities but also helped me improve teamwork and creativity in overcoming research challenges.
Working on SLAM projects was something I had hoped to continue after my master’s, and the PhD opportunity at KU Leuven arrived at just the right time. The foundation I built during the IFRoS program played a key role in my successful application to KU Leuven, one of the best universities in the world. The combination of rigorous coursework and practical projects gave me the confidence and expertise to pursue advanced research in this field.
I am grateful for the support and knowledge I gained from the IFRoS program and excited to continue this journey. I hope my story encourages current and future students to explore their interests deeply and take advantage of the incredible opportunities the IFRoS community offers.”
